ABOUT THE ROLE
Abt Global Central Mechanism, funded by the United States Department of State, is recruiting Assistant Storekeepers to support malaria vector control and HIV/AIDS service delivery across Kenya. Working under the supervision of the Warehouse Manager, you will play a vital role in managing Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) commodities across temporary operational site stores in Busia and Siaya counties.
This entry-level position involves receiving, verifying, storing, labeling, and tracking IRS items at designated locations throughout eight sub-counties in Busia (Bunyala, Butula, Matayos, Nambale, Samia, Teso North, Teso Central, and Teso South) and six sub-counties in Siaya (Alego Usonga, Bondo, Gem, Rarieda, Ugenya, and Ugunja).
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
You will monitor stock levels and coordinate with the storekeeper and warehouse team for inventory replenishments. Your daily duties include conducting stock takes and audits to verify inventory accuracy, reporting discrepancies, and maintaining secure store environments to prevent theft, damage, and unauthorized access.
You will oversee day-to-day store operations, ensure proper storage and identification of all items, and manage requisitions for IRS materials from the main warehouse. A critical aspect of this role involves serializing all insecticide units as required and scanning units during issuance to team leaders while ensuring proper recording by spray operators.
You will inspect all commodities received to verify quality and quantity, maintain comprehensive records of receipts, withdrawals, and stock movements, and follow up on supply requests with the Warehouse Manager. Coordinating with security personnel on store access, ensuring proper storage of short shelf-life items through rotation, and documenting all incidents are essential functions. You will also enforce safety culture by ensuring all storage and handling procedures—particularly for hazardous materials—are strictly followed.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
You must hold a minimum Certificate in Purchasing and Supplies Management or a related field. At least six months of experience working as a store assistant is desirable. A certificate of good conduct may be required.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES
Strong communication abilities in spoken and written English and Kiswahili are essential; local language proficiency is advantageous. You should demonstrate excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office and procurement software, alongside strong organizational and interpersonal skills suited to team-oriented environments.
You will need the ability to build effective relationships with clients, peers, and stakeholders while remaining culturally astute, respectful, and tolerant. Proficiency with smartphones and basic troubleshooting capabilities is required.
DESIRABLE QUALITIES
Additional professional training in procurement and logistics management is preferred. Membership in recognized professional bodies such as CIPS-UK or KISM strengthens your candidacy. Knowledge of U.S. Department of State procurement policies and regulations is advantageous. Ability to work with minimal supervision and willingness to work six days weekly (Monday to Saturday) are valued attributes.
IMPORTANT MEDICAL REQUIREMENT
This position involves daily close contact with insecticides and requires a medical examination including general body examination and pregnancy testing. Applicants with certain medical conditions including chest problems, asthma, or those who are expectant mothers are advised to apply for alternative roles they may be qualified for.
WORK SCHEDULE AND CONTRACT
This is a short-term contract position not exceeding two months, with employment on a need basis.
