About Girl Effect
Girl Effect is an international non-profit organisation dedicated to creating media that girls genuinely want, trust and depend on. Operating across Africa and Asia, the organisation reaches millions of girls through diverse platforms—from chatbots and digital shows to television dramas and cutting-edge technology. Girl Effect empowers girls to make informed choices about their health, nutrition, education, relationships and futures, fostering the confidence they need to take control of their lives. When one girl transforms her circumstances, it creates a ripple effect that strengthens families, communities and entire nations.
The Role
The Communications Manager will play a central role within Girl Effect's Development & Communications Function, driving communications activities that directly support the organisation's fundraising ambitions. Working closely with the Head of Communications, you'll manage key strategic initiatives and serve as the essential link between global communications teams and in-country partners.
Your Key Responsibilities
Supporting Funders and Partnerships
You will cultivate strong relationships with partner communications teams, overseeing co-branded content, joint announcements and communications initiatives. You'll develop compelling funder-facing materials and create engaging assets for high-profile events, including global convenings and executive speaking engagements.
Managing Digital Channels and Media Relations
You'll take ownership of Girl Effect's content strategy across LinkedIn, Instagram and YouTube, ensuring consistent community engagement. You'll maintain the organisation's digital presence, monitor media coverage and emerging opportunities, and lead the press office function, including managing relationships with key journalists and coordinating news announcements.
Developing Compelling Narratives
You'll embed Girl Effect's core narrative throughout all communications materials, ensuring programme results and evidence feed into powerful storytelling. You'll lead the country communications support framework, providing templates, training and resources to in-country teams while gathering essential content from the field.
Managing Brand and Internal Communications
You'll oversee the asset library, photography and video archives, maintaining brand consistency across the organisation. You'll collaborate with the Head of Communications to deliver comprehensive internal communications, including regular all-staff updates.
Operational Management
You'll brief and manage external freelancers, designers, film producers and agencies, maintaining schedules and budgets. You'll track engagement metrics and report progress to senior leadership.
About You
You bring substantial experience in communications, with the ability to work independently on multiple projects while maintaining strong organisational systems. You're an accomplished writer and editor who transforms complex programme data into compelling narratives for donors. You build relationships confidently with partners, teams and senior colleagues across different contexts and cultures.
You demonstrate exceptional organisational skills, comfort with digital tools including Slack, Asana and Google Workspace, and proficiency with design platforms like Canva. You're culturally aware, respectful of diverse perspectives, and genuinely passionate about Girl Effect's mission to transform girls' lives.
Your Background
Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent professional communications experience required. Minimum 4 years' experience in external, donor or corporate communications, ideally within the non-profit or social impact sector. You'll have design and editing experience with demonstrated willingness to expand technical capabilities across multiple platforms and software.
