Job Description
EDUCATION AND YOUNG PEOPLE ENGAGEMENT ASSOCIATE
United Nations Volunteers - East and Southern Africa
About This Role
Sokify is publishing an exciting opportunity with United Nations Volunteers for an Education and Young People Engagement Associate based in Nairobi. This is a full-time, time-bound volunteer position supporting UNICEF Kenya's mission to expand access to quality education for children and young people across the country.
UNICEF's work in Kenya focuses on ensuring every child, particularly those in arid and semi-arid counties, informal settlements, and refugee-hosting areas, has access to inclusive, equitable education. With over 770,000 refugees and asylum seekers in Kenya—many of them school-aged—alongside persistent challenges like poverty, climate shocks, disability, and early pregnancy driving educational exclusion, UNICEF operates comprehensive programmes including PROSPECTS, Education in Emergencies, Inclusive Education, and Adolescent Development and Participation initiatives. This role directly supports those efforts.
What You'll Do
Your primary focus will be strengthening youth engagement and supporting education programme implementation across refugee and host community contexts in Kenya. You will facilitate structured engagement of refugee and host-community youth to ensure their voices shape programme design and coordination processes. You'll support adolescent participation initiatives while contributing to national guidelines and tools for youth engagement.
On the programme implementation side, you will assist with education initiatives across multiple portfolios, coordinate activities including teacher trainings, community mobilization, school verification, and monitoring visits. You'll participate in field missions and document findings and lessons learned for organizational knowledge.
Your data management responsibilities include supporting routine data collection, cleaning, and organization from schools and partner organizations, tracking programme progress, and preparing reporting inputs. You'll help maintain datasets and strengthen information management systems.
You will also document best practices, lessons learned, and programme results across education and youth initiatives, supporting preparation of briefs, presentations, and knowledge products that highlight programme impact. Additionally, you'll support coordination of the Education in Emergencies Working Group, prepare meeting materials, track action points, and manage partner information while collaborating with government, UN agencies, NGOs, and community stakeholders.
What We're Looking For
You must have a minimum of one year relevant experience in community engagement, volunteering, or education programme support. Experience working directly with children, adolescents, or youth groups is essential. Experience in data management or information management is highly valued. You should demonstrate strong ability to work effectively in multicultural and multidisciplinary environments and possess strong digital skills, particularly with Microsoft Office tools.
Your educational background should include secondary education—a high school diploma is required. You must be fluent in English, and working knowledge of Kiswahili is desirable.
