Job Description

EMPLOYEE BENEFITS INVESTIGATOR Position Overview Join the Employee Benefits Security Administration's Division of Investigative Strategies, where you'll lead complex investigations into employee benefits violations and develop enforcement strategies that shape how the agency tackles ERISA violations across the nation. This role combines advanced investigative work with strategic policy development, positioning you at the forefront of employee benefits security. What You'll Do You'll apply deep expertise in EBSA enforcement policies, ERISA regulations, and the employee benefits industry to strengthen investigations and correct violations. Your work will include conducting sophisticated, multi-jurisdictional investigations that set precedents for regional and national enforcement efforts. You'll analyze emerging trends and compliance issues, then translate your findings into actionable strategies for field offices nationwide. Beyond investigations, you'll serve as a trusted technical expert and policy advisor. You'll prepare analytical reports on how regulatory changes, legislative updates, and court decisions impact EBSA's enforcement program. Your research will inform leadership presentations, training materials, and written guidance that advances the agency's understanding of ERISA compliance challenges. You'll also develop innovative investigative models and techniques that strengthen the toolkit available to investigators throughout the department. Collaboration is central to this role. You'll work across EBSA divisions, other DOL components, federal agencies, and state authorities to gather intelligence and coordinate enforcement initiatives. You'll build relationships with legal specialists, financial experts, and health policy professionals to ensure investigations address complex compliance issues comprehensively. Where You'll Work This position requires regular in-person work at a DOL office location, though telework eligibility will be determined by agency policy. Positions are available in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Silver Spring, Washington DC, Atlanta, Plantation, Chicago, Fort Wright, Kansas City, Dallas, Pasadena, San Francisco, and Seattle. Your salary will align with your assigned duty location. What You Need To qualify for this position, you must demonstrate specialized experience equivalent to at least a GS-13 level and meet at least four of the following five criteria: Experience analyzing complex legal, regulatory, or compliance issues related to ERISA, federal securities laws, tax laws, banking regulations, HIPAA, mental health parity laws, or the Affordable Care Act. Experience applying civil investigative techniques to ERISA-covered service providers, including document review, financial analysis, claims data examination, and fiduciary practice assessment. Experience developing or implementing investigative methodologies for complex health or financial practices, including benefits compliance, claims administration, plan funding, fiduciary decision-making, and prohibited transaction identification. Experience providing technical guidance, recommendations, or analytical support to investigators, attorneys, managers, and stakeholders on ERISA-related matters, including enforcement strategies and policy implications. Experience coordinating enforcement activities with internal and external partners, including legal counsel, government agencies, plan officials, fiduciaries, service providers, and regulated entities. Basic Requirements You must be at least 16 years old and a U.S. Citizen. You'll need to obtain the required security clearance and background investigation access before entering duty. If you don't already hold the appropriate clearance level, you'll complete a probationary period to obtain it. No specific educational credentials are required for this role; specialized experience is what matters. About This Opportunity The Department of Labor is committed to protecting worker welfare, improving working conditions, and ensuring that all workers have access to quality employment and benefits. This position plays a critical role in that mission by strengthening benefits security and enforcement nationwide. You'll work within a bargaining unit and gain access to comprehensive federal benefits, including health insurance, retirement plans, and other employee support programs.
