Position: Head of Communications SSA
Organization: Uber
About This Opportunity
Uber is seeking an experienced communications leader to drive strategic narratives across Sub-Saharan Africa, anchoring operations in Johannesburg while managing key markets including South Africa and Kenya. In this role, you'll shape how Uber's mobility and delivery services are perceived and discussed across the region. You'll report to the Head of Communications for Middle East and Africa, bringing your expertise to build brand reputation, manage public perception, and support business growth through powerful storytelling and strategic messaging.
Your Responsibilities
You'll craft and execute high-impact communications campaigns—both corporate and consumer-focused—designed to elevate brand awareness and advance Uber's business objectives. Your strategic thinking will position you as a trusted advisor to internal stakeholders on sensitive matters, enabling you to develop rapid response strategies that protect and enhance reputation during critical moments.
You'll actively manage the news cycle, maintaining daily relationships with journalists and balancing proactive storytelling with reactive communications that defend and strengthen Uber's standing. Working across departments including marketing, public policy, legal, and business teams, you'll ensure messaging alignment and amplify priority narratives across all platforms.
Your role includes advising senior leadership on external communications strategy, positioning them as authoritative voices within the industry. You'll maintain brand consistency across all external channels while overseeing external agencies and vendors to guarantee quality output aligned with organizational goals.
As a company representative, you'll participate in media interviews, press conferences, and public speaking events. You'll also measure communications effectiveness through data analysis, using insights to continuously refine and improve strategies for measurable impact.
Required Qualifications
You bring communications experience from mobility, FMCG, or consumer technology sectors. You've operated successfully within global matrix organizations and dynamic, fast-moving ventures. Fluency in English is essential.
Preferred Experience
Seven or more years in corporate strategic communications and issues management, with demonstrated success navigating complex challenges while building strong brand affinity through significant initiatives. You possess a robust media and influencer network and excel at extending audience reach beyond traditional media relations.
You demonstrate intellectual curiosity and comfort with experimentation as a learning tool. You build strong cross-functional relationships, balance analytical rigor with execution excellence, and maintain attention to detail while managing high volumes of requests. You thrive in fast-paced settings, juggle multiple priorities effectively, demonstrate sound news judgment, and write with exceptional clarity and impact.
What We Offer
Competitive compensation including performance bonuses, equity participation, and comprehensive benefits. This role requires a minimum 50 percent in-office presence in Johannesburg unless approved for remote work arrangements. Specific attendance requirements vary by role; contact your recruiter for details.
