Job Description
PRODUCT MANAGER - DEVICES
Sun King is seeking a Product Manager - Devices to join our EasyBuy Program Management team. This is a permanent, full-time position based in either Lagos, Nigeria or Nairobi, Kenya.
ABOUT THE ROLE
As Product Manager - Devices, you will serve as the bridge between customer insights, competitive analysis, and product validation across our entire phone portfolio. You will own the market perspective throughout the complete device lifecycle — from identifying customer needs and conducting competitive benchmarking, to executing field trials and planning product transitions. You will partner with our Hardware Engineering & Procurement teams, Software Engineering & Security teams, and Commercial teams to ensure every new device meets real-world market demands and undergoes rigorous validation before launch.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
Market & Customer Requirements
Conduct comprehensive surveys and interviews with customers and agents across target markets to uncover desired features, specifications, and improvements for new phone models. Translate these findings into structured, prioritized market requirement briefs organized by geography and customer segment to inform device development.
Competitive Benchmarking
Maintain a curated list of competitive phone models relevant to our market positioning and customer alternatives. Establish both quantitative benchmarking criteria (performance, battery life, signal quality) and qualitative criteria (user experience, build quality, ergonomics) for lab testing and analysis.
Field Trial Planning & Execution
Define comprehensive field trial requirements including survey instruments, success metrics, and clear pass/fail criteria. Create an integrated field trial plan that consolidates input from Business Units and Engineering teams. Manage end-to-end trial execution including site selection, participant training, sales enablement, survey deployment, and results reporting. Report issues discovered during trials to Engineering teams immediately and in detail. Feed market-side inputs back to Engineering in formats that support their technical review and approval processes.
Cross-Functional Alignment
Maintain ongoing communication with Engineering teams on project status, schedule milestones, and technical risks. Promptly escalate delays or blockers affecting market validation timelines. Act as the primary contact for all device programs, ensuring Business Unit requirements are clearly communicated and tracked through launch.
Post-Launch Feedback Management & Product Improvement
Own all post-launch product feedback for currently deployed phone models covering hardware and software performance. Systematically collect feedback from the Contact Center, After-Sales teams, and field sales teams into a structured feedback log. Analyze consolidated feedback to identify recurring issues and prioritized improvement opportunities across hardware, Android OS, and MDM layers. Present findings to Engineering teams in clear, actionable formats tied to specific models, software versions, and customer segments. Track flagged issues through resolution and hold Engineering teams accountable to agreed timelines. Support planning and deployment of hardware and software upgrades based on field feedback.
End-of-Life Planning
Lead end-of-life decision-making for existing phone models, coordinating with Commercial, Engineering, and Operations stakeholders on timing, transitions, and commercial impacts.
WHAT YOU BRING
Experience & Background
Minimum 5 years in product management or market strategy within mobile devices or consumer electronics. Bachelor's degree or Higher National Diploma from a reputable institution in Engineering or related field. Familiarity with ODM and device development processes. Proven experience designing and running structured field trials or market validation programs. Track record of successful cross-functional collaboration with Engineering, Software, and Commercial teams. Hands-on experience in device QA, device acceptance testing, or technical product validation with ability to write precise, testable hardware and software acceptance criteria.
Core Skills
Strong analytical abilities to synthesize qualitative and quantitative customer data into clear, prioritized recommendations. Comfortable interpreting technical test reports, lab results, and software release notes. Able to ask informed questions of Engineering teams and critically assess responses. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to produce crisp requirement documents, integrated plans, and executive reports. Structured project management approach with ability to coordinate multiple concurrent workstreams across geographies and time zones. Proficient in Excel for data analytics and familiar with relevant Excel formulas.
