Job Description
SENIOR UNDERWRITER – INTERNATIONAL (TREATY/FACULTATIVE)
Kenya Re is seeking an accomplished Senior Underwriter to join our International underwriting division. This is a pivotal role that demands a seasoned professional capable of managing complex reinsurance portfolios while driving business growth and fostering client excellence.
ABOUT THE ROLE
You will take ownership of evaluating, pricing, and approving sophisticated reinsurance treaties and facultative risks, balancing portfolio profitability with sustainable business expansion. This position merges technical underwriting expertise with business development acumen, market intelligence gathering, and junior staff mentorship. Your decisions will directly influence our company's financial health and market position.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Your day-to-day impact will encompass several critical areas. In underwriting and risk assessment, you will analyse and negotiate complex reinsurance treaties and facultative risks within your authority limits, leveraging actuarial data and market trends to establish competitive yet profitable premiums, terms, and coverage structures. You will conduct rigorous risk evaluations and make sound acceptance or declination decisions grounded in thorough analysis.
On the business development front, you will cultivate strong professional relationships with brokers, cedants, and retrocessionaires while identifying emerging opportunities that fuel strategic growth. Your market insights will inform company planning, and your responsiveness to client needs will set the standard for service excellence across the division.
Portfolio stewardship is equally essential. You will monitor performance metrics to spot profitability and expansion opportunities, reconcile accounts, verify treaty statements, and manage facultative closings. When complex underwriting challenges surface, you will contribute expertise toward effective resolution.
Leading by example, you will mentor junior underwriters, contribute to policy refinement, and ensure every decision meets compliance requirements and regulatory standards.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
You must hold a Bachelor's Degree in Actuarial Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Commerce with an Insurance focus, Business Administration, or a closely related discipline.
Professional credentials must include either ACII (Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute – London) or AIIK (Associate of the Insurance Institute of Kenya), plus completion of a supervisory course of at least two weeks' duration. You must demonstrate proficiency with standard computer applications and underwriting systems, and you must satisfy the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.
A minimum of six years' substantive experience in insurance or reinsurance underwriting is mandatory, with advanced-level expertise specifically in treaty and facultative reinsurance markets. French language competency is considered a distinct advantage.
KEY COMPETENCIES
Success in this position demands outstanding negotiation, communication, and presentation capabilities. Your analytical mindset and problem-solving orientation must be evident, supported by demonstrated expertise in underwriting analysis and statistical tools. You must possess deep, practical knowledge of reinsurance products, policy wordings, and market dynamics. Above all, sound professional judgment, meticulous attention to detail, and confident decision-making under pressure are non-negotiable.
